Street Series Showdown—Clash of the Custom Toyota Camrys

The custom Camry scene has been doing its part to make the automotive world a more interesting place: transforming the mechanically bulletproof, but otherwise somewhat overlooked, Toyotas into unique, rubberneck-inducing works of individualistic expression.

Today, we’ll be featuring two very different late-model Camrys, each thoroughly customized to the liking of their respective owners, acting as rolling showcases of their own personalities. Each car is equipped with a MagnaFlow Toyota Camry Street Series Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System #19494.

The Dark Knight

There’s never been a better time to customize your Camry, with more aftermarket components available than ever before. That in part, is what gave Kenny Huynh (Ig: @8thgenxse) the idea to use it as the starting platform for a custom build. Another reason is that a properly tricked-out Camry still just isn’t a common sight on the road, which alone makes the ride pretty special. He also really liked the way the latest model Camry looked on camera with its more aggressive lines and styling, especially when compared with its ancestors. His particular example is a 2019 XSE.

Kenny describes the guiding philosophy behind his customizations as going for a “VIP” build but explains that the vehicle has developed a bit of a “track stance” over the course of its upgrades. The dark honeycomb aesthetic of the sedan is accentuated by a Yofer body kit, including a front lip, side skirts and rear diffuser.
A set of low-profile tires on dark 19” Rotiform wheels help complete the menacing look. The upgrades are more than just surface-level, however, and include a set of Megan Racing tow and camber arms in addition to a 3P Airlift Suspension kit.

Of course, as it’s a project car, the work is never really complete. His next endeavors include a custom trunk setup and interior rework. He’s also considering changing up the wheels. Kenny’s really pleased with the car as is though. With regard to his Camry’s MagnaFlow exhaust, he says its “what makes me want to drive it more because it’s not drone-y, it’s not too loud, it’s got just the right pitch to it.”

The Crimson Kamuri

Next up we have the “Crimson Kamuri.” Jay Sanders (Ig: @crimsonkamuri) has always seen himself as a “one-of-a-kind” guy and wanted his ride to reflect that. His 2020 SE model has visual personality to spare thanks to its complete body kit (front lip, side skirts, rear diffuser and spoiler) wrapped in crimson vinyl. This visual enhancement is accompanied by a roof spoiler and window visors from H.I.C USA, as well as Lexus Style Taillights and LED reflector lights.

The signature piece of the entire build, and Jay’s favorite component on the car, is a real forged carbon fiber Custom Designed Steering Wheel from CZD Auto Parts. He spent a lot of time designing the wheel, and, according to Jay “it feels great to know there’s one thing on my build that nobody else in the community has. And it’s extremely pleasant to hold while driving.”

Like Kenny, Jay was intrigued by the idea of turning the stereotypical “grocery getter” vehicle into something unique and attention grabbing. He also liked that the Camry’s famous affordability gave him more breathing room when it came to investing in aftermarket mods. Performance enhancements he’s made so far include a cold air intake from AEM, a throttle body spacer from Grocery Getters Performance, and of course a MagnaFlow Street Series Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System. He really loves that the exhaust sounds great without attracting any unwanted attention.

As is the case with his Camry compatriot, Jay has big plans ahead for his crimson car, including some RGB Retro fitted headlights, various JDM components, power folding mirrors, sequential turn signal mirrors and ambient interior lighting. Jay also wants to customize his exhaust tips with a wet gloss black finish. Future performance upgrades such as Weapon R headers, a D3 Performance tuning, 3P Airlift Suspension, 3-piece wheels from ESR and Yofer spoiler and diffuser are also in the cards.
