Maine allows non-CARB compliant converters on vehicles model year 2000 and older. For 2001 and newer vehicles, a CARB-compliant converter is required only if the vehicle is equipped with a California/CARB emissions system. Vehicles with a Federal/EPA emissions system may use either a non-CARB compliant converter or a CARB-compliant converter.
