The Fast Saga Continues—With A Little Help from MagnaFlow

The time has come once again for the automotive faithful to gather in theaters across the globe for the latest entry in the world’s biggest car-focused action film franchise. As you no doubt have heard (or even better, seen), Dom Toretto has gotten the family back together for another harrowing adventure with F9: The Fast Saga, the latest entry in the Fast & Furious series.

SpeedKore's Tribute to Dominic Torreto

F9, which released in the United States on June 25, has garnered attention for a couple new stars that will be making their saga debut in this entry. One of those faces is John Cena, who will be playing Dom’s brother, Jakob Toretto. The other star has a familiar face, but a closer look reveals its entirely new character. I am of course talking about Dom’s black 1968 Dodge Charger, which has been a staple of the series since the franchise’s beginning with The Fast and the Furious (2001). The famous Mopar machine has been completely gutted and reimagined as a mid-engine monster with some help from MagnaFlow and our friends over at SpeedKore. Better yet, we’ve also collaborated with them to build a fully functional road-legal version of Dom’s legendary Dodge.

Obviously, such a mighty muscle car is useless if it doesn’t sound the part, which is where we came in. Working in close collaboration with SpeedKore, we were able to develop an ideal custom exhaust solution using off-the-shelf MagnaFlow components, just as we did for the mid-engine Chargers you see on the screen.

From Famous to ‘Hellacious’

Fans of the series will instantly recognize Dom Toretto’s fabled black Charger. Not only has it been heavily featured throughout the films, but it boasts enough charisma on its own to make it many viewers’ favorite ride across twenty years of films that star cool cars. Besides the traditional Mopar mechanicals, much of the classic Charger’s enduring appeal is a result of its effortlessly epic appearance, a visage that still resonates so much today that modern Dodge Chargers have been specifically designed to evoke it.

SpeedKore's 1968 Dodge Charger

Fortunately, those looks haven’t changed much with either the movie car or this faithful replica! Well, unless you peek through the rear window. That’s where you’ll find the 6.2L HEMI V8 from the modern Hellcat! The popular motor’s 707 horsepower is routed through the gated 6-speed manual Graziano transaxle from a Lamborghini Gallardo. An obligatory NOS canister can be found tastefully tucked away between the driver and passenger seat. Each corner of the vehicle features custom center-lock 18-inch HRE wheels wrapped in a set of 275/35 R18 tires in the front and 345/35 R18 tires in the rear. Beefy Brembo six-piston front and four piston rear brake calipers can also be seen peeking out between the spokes. While the build retains the Charger’s legendary presence, the body panels are now entirely carbon fiber and are assembled atop a custom SpeedKore frame just like they built for the hero cars used in the film. The Detroit Speed-supplied double-A arm front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension from Race Car Replicas have also been lowered for a leaner, meaner profile, accentuated by the car’s widebody dimensions and flared fenders.

Moving the engine to the middle of what was previously a decidedly front-engine ride required quite a bit of rearranging and clever packaging. A fuel cell can now be found where the engine once was. The radiator up front has been replaced with an upgraded unit from Saldana, while a set of intercoolers located in the new engine compartment is used to increase the density of air reaching the engine. A glass window has been placed as a barrier between the new engine compartment and the vehicles interior for the sake of practicality and comfort.

Lastly, a set of SpeedKore headers connects to a custom MagnaFlow exhaust system, which we created using our 3” diameter stainless steel performance exhaust system builder kit (#10703) and a couple of our 6” round straight through performance mufflers (#14159). The resulting exhaust system bellows with the deep, signature exhaust note that MagnaFlow is known for, which incidentally is perfect for making the car stand out even more both on and off the big screen. SpeedKore has dubbed their creation ‘Hellacious,’ and frankly, we can’t think of a better way to describe it.
