Tech Center Recap: Bringing out the Beast in the New Bronco Sport
Our engineering team at the MagnaFlow Tech Center has been getting acquainted with Ford’s recently revived off-roader, the Ford Bronco. By combining the utility, capability and charisma that made the older Ford Broncos into icons, with modern day technology and comfort, the folks at Ford have created a new family of Broncos that are truly worthy heirs to the legacy of their forebearers.
Bucking Its Way Into the 21st Century
The original Ford Bronco is a storied vehicle by any measure. From its beginnings in 1965 as one of the earliest sport utility vehicles, to the end of its original production run over three decades later in 1996, the Bronco captured the hearts of the American public with its rugged good looks and “G.O.A.T” (Goes Over Any Terrain) off-roading capabilities.
While the original Bronco enjoyed broad popularity and led to Ford selling more than a million units over the course of its 30+ year run, its legacy is still felt to this day. The Bronco has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, even long after it was done being produced. Notable big screen credits include the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), Speed (1994) and No Country for Old Men (2007), to name a few. Of course, the Bronco is equally well known as the vehicle O.J. Simpson was riding in when he was being chased by the LAPD back in 1994. It’s estimated that approximately 95 million Americans watched the chase on live TV.
Now, 25 years after its initial run, the Ford Bronco is back and better than ever! The new 2021 Bronco has been designed to evoke the classic styling of the original, with the team even going so far as digitally scanning the design chief’s 1976 example to use as a reference for the new vehicle. Or, I should say, new vehicles, as the 2021 Ford Bronco family now includes two distinct models: the Bronco SUV and smaller Bronco Sport CUV.
Don’t Call It Baby Bronco
The larger, higher riding Bronco SUV carries the torch for the original off-roader, as its body-on-frame design enables it to clear obstacles and conquer trails with dexterity comparable to its peers such as the omnipresent Jeep Wrangler. We’ll talk a bit more about the new Bronco SUV in the future, but recently the MagnaFlow Tech Center has wrapped up work on a new Street Series performance exhaust system engineered specifically for the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport CUV. As the acronym implies, the Bronco Sport is the crossover little brother of the lineup, tuned more for city use and the occasional off-road adventure than its more purpose-built sibling.
To reflect the generally urban lifestyle of Bronco Sport owners, our team at the MagnaFlow Tech Center felt an addition to our Street Series line of performance exhaust kits was in order. This new Ford Bronco Sport exhaust system is compatible with both the 1.5L and 2.0L engine options. It features 2.5” mandrel bent main piping that passes through an NDT resonator and a straight-through muffler before ending in a dual exit layout with 4” diameter black chrome finished tips. NDT refers to MagnaFlow’s No Drone Technology, which utilizes techniques such as quarter-wave passive noise cancellation to keep unwanted sound to a minimum at cruising speeds. This tech, in concert with careful kit design, allows for us to create a system that generates the awesome, deep, powerful exhaust tone that MagnaFlow is known for, while keeping sound to mild levels in the vehicle’s interior. All this means a moderate boost to your rig’s exterior exhaust sound while keeping interior volume at comfortable levels conducive to being stuck in traffic or steady cruising on the highway.
