continues: excellence improved

A quick trip to the MagnaFlow distributors at Car Sound Performance Exhaust in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, and we were all set up for installation and dyno testing. We have always had good results when working with Car Sound in the past, and our HD exhaust installation proved to be the same. No fuss or muss, simply a clean shop with a competent staff and a whole lot of MagnaFlow products. As per our usual mode, we dyno-tested the truck before and after installation of the new MagnaFlow system. The factory exhaust system was easily removed because we were working with a new truck and the exhaust components had not been treated to 10,000 cycles of heating and cooling, and the parts weren't welded to each other yet.

Examination of the MagnaFlow system showed it to be constructed of 16-gauge aluminized steel construction with true mandrel bends and lap-jointed welds. The MagnaFlow muffler uses a straight-through design to help smooth out the exhaust flow with a minimum of backpressure. Internal construction is

high temperature, acoustical-absorbing material and stainless steel mesh around the muffler core to prevent packing blowouts. MagnaFlow free-flowing mufflers aim to help reduce engine heat and improve exhaust scavenging from the combustion chamber. The Chevy HD system features a compact, free flowing muffler with dual 3-inch inlet tubes and a single 4-inch outlet tube.

Installation of the MagnaFlow system was fairly simple and straightforward. We remove the factory stock parts, slid the new muffler into place, and secured it with the supplied band clamps. The MagnaFlow set up used the factory hangers and grommets and fit the Chevy well. MagnaFlow offers more than two dozen different styles of tips, and we chose to go with a 15-degree, slash-cut polished exhaust tip on our HD.

Dyno tests of the stock 6.0L Chevy HD showed baselines of 255 hp at 5,100 rpm and 296.4 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. After installing the MagnaFlow system, our HD put out 273 hp at 5,100 rpm along with 326.9 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. With gains of 16 hp and more than 30 lb-ft of torque, the MagnaFlow system provides power you can actually feel on the road. The new Chevy 6.0L engine was much peppier after installation of MagnaFlow components.
