AIR INTAKE
Since internal combustion engines are basically air pumps, the next logical step in making power was to open things up on the intake side of the engine. The easiest upgrade would have been the installation of a high-flow replacement air filter in the stock box, but we wanted to take it to the next level, so we installed an Advanced Flow Engineering Magna Force high-flow air intake system on the truck.

The heart of aFe's system is its Magnum Flow air filter. The filter features a polyurethane outer casing for a perfect seal to the airbox. The pleats are also precisely molded to the casing and flow more than 300 cfm over a paper filter and more than 400 cfm better than conventional foam filters.

Mating the filter to the factory mass airflow sensor is aFe's billet alumnum adapter, which creates a smooth transition for less turbulent airflow. In a nutshell, the aFe intake system will out-flow the stock air intake and allow more air into the engine. As was the case with all the modifications we made, we allowed the truck's computer to adjust to the change by driving a couple hundred miles with the new parts in place prior to testing.

The aFe Magna Force air intake system comes with a new airbox with hood seal, billet adapte, filter, and all the necessary hardware for installation.

 


And this is the soon-to-be-replaced stock airbox.


After loosening the hose clamp between the airbox and mass airflow sensor, the airbox is lifted straight out of the inner fenderwell. It's held in place by four plastic inserts that released as we tugged on the box.

 


Below the airbox is the mounting plate. It's held to the inner fender by five bolts and must be removed before installing the aFe system.


It's now time to assemble the aFe system. The billet filter adapter is first bolted to the airbox using the provided hardware.

 


This is a front view of the billet adapter. It's a perfectly machined piece that will smooth the path of airflow from the filter to the intake tube.


Also included in the aFe package was this gasket, which seals the airbox to the hood. The purpose of the gasket is to keep the hot air around the engine from entering the airbox. The cooler the air going into the motor, the more power the motor will make.

 


The new airbox is installed in place of the factory one, using four of the five factory bolts.


A silicone hose adapter provided with the kit is then installed onto the intake tube.

 


A new hose clamp is then added to the adapter and both are installed onto the airbox.


Here is the new Magnum Flow air filter being prepped for installation with a hose clamp. The company builds this filter with exacting tolerances and larger pleats than most other filters on the market. The larger pleats provide more surface area for better filtration.


 


And finally, the filter is clamped into place inside of the airbox.
