continues: MagnaFlow-Off!

As you can see by the dyno sheets included here, the X-pipe made the most horsepower and torque. Looking at horsepower first, we see that the stock system made 224.7 horsepower at roughly 4,900 rpm, while the H-pipe was worth over 10 horsepower at about 100 rpm less. The X-pipe beat them both with 242.4 horsepower at a slightly higher 4,950 rpm. Now let's look at torque. The peak rpm points stayed about the same, but the H-pipe was worth a whopping 13 ft-lbs more than stock, and the X-pipe was up over 20 ft-lbs! All the tests were with the Flowmaster mufflers in place.

MagnaFlow claims the X-pipe junction is superior to an H-shaped crossover. One thing we've always known is that the X-pipe has a unique sound. Why run a crossover at all? Because a crossover equalizes the exhaust pulses in the system, which improves scavenging. It also reduces exhaust system resonance.

Our car was the first '99 that MagnaFlow had a chance to work on, so they had to custom-fabricate the flange where the pipe meets up with the passenger-side exhaust manifold.
