This is the first in a two-part article on how you can gain some much-needed horsepower and torque from your 2.2L-powered Chevy S-10. We all know that the current generation S-10 is by far the most widely customized mini in existence, and it was only a matter of time before someone stepped up and made some parts for its base model motor.
We started out by dyno-ing a test mule in stock form and then moving on to installing a bolt-in MagnaFlow after-cat exhaust system. The system is made up of 2-1/4-inch stainless steel piping and a high-flow, polished muffler. The most unique aspect of the MagnaFlow system is the muffler, which contains a straight-through design with no chambers or baffles. With it, you gain free, unrestricted exhaust flow for real horsepower gains. After dyno-ing the truck with the exhaust in place, we decided to see what a difference a K&N air filter would make. With both parts installed, the owner of this truck noticed an immediate gain in power and gas mileage. Follow along while we detail the simple installation of these pieces and what a difference they made in a '98 S-10. Next month, we'll up the ante with the installation of a full-tilt air intake system and a computer hop-up from JET Performance. If you would like to find out more information on these cool products, use the information listed in the source box.
