Back when loud exhaust were considered just a nuisance and not against the law, enthusiasts would strap a glasspack or straight tube to a V8 and revel in the volumous roar that would erupt from the tailpipes when the pedal was pressed. Those days have long since passed thanks to strict emissions laws and state ordinances against excessively loud noise, however there are many people out there who still want the performance of a low-restriction exhaust system without the noise that typically accompanies the set-up. Throaty rumble, yes; a bull that just finished off a five-gallon bucket of beans, no. In fact, we get e-mail everyday from readers of Today's SUV asking us what companies offer low-restriction exhaust systems that don't sound like a belching bison.
We had the opportunity to attend an afternoon clinic on exhausts at Truck Toys in Irvine,

California, a veritable truck and SUV accessory wonderland and an authorized distributor of MagnaFlow exhaust components. Once there, we caught up with Brian Koster and Brian Geraci from Car Sound Exhaust Systems, Incorporated, manufacturers of high-quality performance mufflers and exhaust systems sold under the MagnaFlow moniker. Our visit included a discussion on exhaust system basics and we had the chance to witness the installation of a MagnaFlow performance exhaust system on a '98 Chevy Tahoe.
