Of the number of after-market muffler designs on the market, Car Sound Exhaust Systems offers a unique design, of which they are obviously proud. Their MagnaFlow mufflers are touted to have no chambers, no baffles, no louvers and no restrictions. Car Sound says the mufflers used in the Mustang kits outflow OEM mufflers by 135 percent.
What's the secret?
Well, they use a simple but effective design, which vents exhaust through a perforated tube surrounded by stainless steel mesh and running through a case filled with "maximum sound absorption material." According to Car Sound, this design delivers no back pressure in a reversible package, while the stainless steel mesh resist high temperatures, thus eliminating blow-out of the sound dampener.
With claims like that, you'd think MagnaFlows would make your Mustang sound like a Top Fueler in the burnout box-not so. MagnaFlows are actually quiet at idle, yet they provide a deep, robust tone which swells with the throttle. These mufflers even lessen the 2,000-rpm cruising drone common to Mustangs with other aftermarket mufflers. Plus, they are aluminized, lap-joint welded, and feature a limited-lifetime warranty.

We didn't have a chance to dyno our loaner Cobra from Rancho Santa Margarita Ford, but Car Sound later had the opportunity to run before and after numbers on an 803-mile Cobra. The results showed an average gain of 13 hp on the bone-stock snake. Other interesting data logged by Car Sound is a 5-degree reduction at the cats, a 90-degree reduction at the muffler, and a 55-degree decrease in temperature at the exhaust tip, so the MagnaFlow system is obviously more efficient. Their 0-60 testing says the after-cat system is good for an average hastening of 1.05 seconds. -Steve Turner 5.0
