FREE-BREATHING CHALLENGERS / Story by: Steve Statham
Now that the 2009 Dodge Challenger is moving from dealership lots to owners' garages in increasing numbers, more people are searching the aftermarket for traditional hot rodding parts for these cars.
At the SEMA trade show last fall, Challenger parts were practically falling out of the sky, as the aftermarket rushed to fill expected demand. One of the first to market was MagnaFlow, which introduced free-flowing stainless steel exhaust kits for the Challenger R/T, SRT8, and even the base Challenger. |

DURABILITY, POWER AND SUPREME SOUND QUALITY FROM
MAGNAFLOW PERFORMANCE EXHAUST
Text & Photos by Travis Noack
Exhaust upgrades have always been one of the most popular modifications made to a customized pickup. Next to a modified stance your truck has to sound as cool as it looks, whether you're rolling high or low. Opening up your engine's "vocal chords" and letting it breathe not only unleashes raw power, but produces a deep and notable exhaust grunt that makes whatever you've got under the hood sound mean...

Their annual trade-only convention is held annually at the Las Vegas Convention Center in early November, and member manufacturers show their newest and greatest parts to the eager member of the media, as well as potential buyers...

SUPER ROD / pages 30 – 39 |

Story by: Stephan K. Anderson / Photos by: Josh Mishler
Of all the cars that have found favor among super rodders and racers alike, few would argue the appeal of ’39-’41 Willys coupes and pickups, which have enjoyed a powerful attraction since first appearing as gas coupe and sedan drag racers back in the 60’s. As racers replaced their curvy contours with more modern racecars, the visibility of these cars actually seemed to increase in the decades that followed, as rodding enthusiasts were either looking to emulate racers past of shape radical new takes on these cartoon-like contours. |

As you’ve seen on these pages, Bill Goldberg has built a ’65 Dodge Coronet two-door sedan with a Hemi engine. It’s quite a nice car, but the finishing touches transformed it from a Hemi-powered Coronet sedan to the undeniable look of a ’65 factory A-990 Super Stock. The inspiration for its transformation into a race car look-alike was a photo Goldberg found on eBay of an original A-990 sedan owned and raced in 1965 by Richard Schroder. This photo became the roadmap for the period he wanted for his Dodge. |

Covers are elusive. Much like the “perfect 10” woman, who lives you for you and your flaws, doesn’t mind your stinky shoes, and is a gourmet chef in the kitchen; cover trucks can sometimes be mythical. Whereas women are one of our greatest gifts, cover trucks can sometimes be our biggest pains. Money, time, frustration, and just getting the darn thing done are the usual suspects involved. Ricky Holly of Houston found his perfect 10 in his wife Sherrie, and when it came time to build his next cover truck, a classic Chevy would fulfill his love of building custom rides. |

Clean inside and out, this five-year project has been modified or upgraded to achieve its look and performance. The first time we saw Mick Urkano’s ’98 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, we were instantly attracted to its bright blue paint scheme. The Pottsville, PA native transformed an ordinary Jetta into a spectacular ride. The transformation, however, was not an over night achievement, but rather a five-year project. During the project, Urkano took time to graduate from the Virginia Military institute, went to work as a civil engineer, and became a U.S. Army Reserve Commander of the 369th Firefighters. |

When top model, Adrienne, Janic of Overhaulin’ and Hot Rod TV fame decided to build a custom 1968 Firebird from scratch with YearOne, it was anyone’s guess how it would turn out. For the past three years television viewers around the world have watched “AJ” deign, build and buff-out cars for a variety of other people. So when Hot Rod TV gave her a chance to design and build a c custom car to her own specifications with help from the hot rod gurus at YearOne, the custom auto world held their collective breath to see how she would do it. The final verdict? Mission accomplished. |

Project GT500 Stage 2: Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust
The second stage of the TC Motorsports project GT500 is a 3-inch Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust System (part #16674). The stock exhaust system has a rather mild exhaust note which is great for long cruising, but performance enthusiasts (probably a large majority of GT500 owners) will want the sound coming out of the tailpipes to match the power of what is underneath the hood. Magnaflow’s 3-inch cat-back system does just that ... |

Full-Length Boogie - Dynatech and Magnaflow Team Do Number Crunching
Anyone who has spent time researching GM's Gen-III, LS-based motors knows that bolt-on power adders can definitely stack up. Our truck already had in place a K&N FIPK, a Granatelli MAF, a BBK throttle-body, a pieced-together after-cat exhaust, and a Hypertech programmer... |

Beat The Law - The Truth About Going Catless
More exhaust backpressure generally means less horsepower, and a stock catalytic converter is often the greatest source of backpressure in an exhaust system. So it's no wonder the catalytic is often tossed in favor of an eBay "test pipe" when a performance-minded owner starts itching for a little more power. But there are a few downsides to de-catting a car - the big one being that it's illegal ... |

Waiting to Exhale...More Power! - Power-Proven Products from MagnaFlow and Doug's Headers
It's amazing what a little fine-tuning and quality parts will do. We've been subjecting this '72 Chevy C-10, which is by no means above average, to anything you could find across the country in local classifieds. One of the worst things about the truck's mechanical state was the exhaust system, or what was left of it. At one time someone put in full-length headers, glasspacks, and an H-pipe to make up what might have been a decent way to flow the exhaust out of the engine, but-it's always the but-the original parts used were pretty cheap... |

Keeping That Performance Attitude at MagnaFlow
For many off-roaders, the end is wheat often comes first. No, we're not talking about he last mile of a trail ride, but your tailpipe. It's no secret that replacing the constictive factory exhaust system with a freer flowing aftermarket unit is one of the quickest and most-effective ways to get more power - just what you need for grunting up gnarly grade. That's true whether your truck is towing a toy hauler or you're working your way over rocks in your trail rig. Not only that, many purpose built, off-road rigs require a custom-crafted exhaust system that can fit in the tangle of lift-kit components ... |

Wide Open - "MAGNAFLOW RSX"
The DC2 Integra will always be one of my favorite cars. Although the platform shares the same chassis with the Honda Civic, it always felt, looked and drove like a completely different vehicle. So when the eventual demise of the DC2 came about and the new DC5 RSX was released, I was rather bummed. Gone was the double wishbone suspension, gone was the high flying B18 motor and gone were the round headlights I somehow grew to love. I never really took too well to the RSX. Something was missing. Something just didn't feel right. The K20 motor was a pain in the butt to work on. |

STRAIGHT THROUGH AND WIDE OPEN - "MagnaFlow Installs Their Cat-Back System Onto A 2003 Expedition"
Recently, I was standing around listening to a bunch of "would-be" car guys talking about exhaust systems. I was surprised when I realized that few in that assemblage really understood the difference between "press-bent" and "mandrel-bent" pipes. Of course, that made me review just what I knew about it. The way I understood it and simply put, press-bent exhaust piping results in pipes that are somewhat "pinched" where they bend and change direction. Pinched exhaust piping causes restricted airflow. Mandrel-bent pipes are bent with special equipment by which... |
