"Big Daddy" Don Garlits, a quien se podría considerar el patriarca de las picadas Top Fuel, desarrolló el primer dragster con motor trasero exitoso y compitió con éxito durante cuatro décadas. En 2001, la NHRA lo votó como el número uno en la lista de los 50 principales para sus primeros 50 años, de 1951 a 2001. Batió ocho records de velocidad, obtuvo 17 títulos de campeón del mundo y ganó en un total de 144 eventos nacionales en su camino hacia el triunfo en ocho campeonatos nacionales estadounidenses. Su dragster "Swamp Rat XXX" se encuentra en exhibición en la Smithsonian Institution.
